Queenie Bee Beate and Johnny King Honey Bee are very upset over an Associated Press news article released on 25 June, 2002, titled 'Study Links Spanking to Aggression.' Part of the news article is quoted below:
QUOTE: The psychologist, Elizabeth Gershoff, found links between spanking and 10 negative behaviors or experiences, including aggression, anti-social behavior and mental health problems. The one positive result of spanking that she identified was quick compliance with parental demands. "Americans need to re-evaluate why we believe it is reasonable to hit young, vulnerable children, when it is against the law to hit other adults, prisoners, and even animals," Gershoff writes in the new edition of the American Psychological Association's bimonthly journal. UNQUOTE We have been upset about child spanking - and child abuse - for a very long time. Even more disturbing - totally shocking - to us were the results of a poll conducted by excite.com on 27 June, 2002 in response to the AP news release. 'It never harmed me when I was a kid,' seems to be the most prevelent excuse used. Hello, people!!! We are living in another time, another place. It wasn't right then, still isn't right now!!! The AP news article mentioned spanking children in the age group 2 to 6. Well, whoever in their right mind spanks a two years old baby??? The spanking of older children was not addressed. We wonder why??? We wonder why because it exists. Teens are being spanked regularly. With teens spankings usually cross the line and result in out and out child abuse. Hello.... are you people awake there??? Do you have the common sense God gave a goose??? We doubt it... There is another question and an issue to raise about 'spankings.' What is a 'spanking?' We will answer that one for you. It is anything from slapping on the butt with a hand progressing to striking the naked butt with a leather strap or belt. Do not fool or delude yourselves that there are not children ranging right up to age 18 who get the strap on their bare butts in our country. Because so many of you obviously do not have the sense that God gave a goose... and the excite.com poll proved that there are so many of you... the issue needs laws in every state to prevent such abuse. Because some of you are crass barbarians who do not know the difference between a spanking and a strapping. Or injure a child with a hand spanking. Spanking a two year old baby??? BARBARIC!!! We are just weird bees, but you ought to pay attention to professional advice.
